Our winery tour departs Charlottetown and we will take scenic drive to Matos Winery. Matos Winery & Vineyards is a family-owned and family-run business. In 2007, after spending much time researching the growing conditions and suitability of establishing a vineyard in PEI, Jim Matos and his family purchased a 50-acre parcel of land in St. Catherines. They applied the French concept of terroir – finding a place where the combination of soil, slope, sun exposure and the peculiar weather vagaries allow certain grape varieties to unfold their unique characteristics. To this end, they consulted with the finest European vintners who visited PEI to provide their expertise.
We depart Matos Winery & Vineyard and head West for Barnone Brewery and Hop Farm, a small Farm Brewery situated in the beautiful picturesque rolling hills of Rose Valley. Founded in 2011 by Father and Son team Hugh and Don Campbell. We grow a small hopyard with 4-6 hop varieties. At Barnone believe in sharing the finest craft beer and experiences with you.
Some ask is it Bar None? Or Barn One? We say both.
A short drive leads us to our next destination Deep Roots Distillery. A family-run, small-batch, craft distillery located in Warren Grove, Prince Edward Island. The distillery took root in 1990 with their first 200 apple trees. By 1995 there were two acres of trees and they opened a u-pick. In 2005 the transition to certified organic was complete.
While the orchard had always operated as a hobby farm, in 2012 the idea of operating a distillery and by July 2014 Deep Roots released their flagship Island Tide spirit. From there we crafted our popular Maple Liqueur using pure syrup from our son Greg’s maple grove as well as syrup from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
Deep Roots now has 8 delicious Island-made products to share with you. We were awarded 2 medals by Artisan Distillers Canada for their 2019 Canadian Artisan Spirit competition. Our newest addition, Absinthe, won a gold medal and best in class! We are very proud of these accomplishments and will use this momentum to carry us toward new and exciting creations.
From roots to bottle, we hope you enjoy their spirits and liqueurs as much as we do!
Your Winery Tour leaves Deep Roots Distillery and take a short drive to, Honeydew Apiaries. As we come over the Canoe Cove road hilltop, we are greeted with an astounding view of the Northumberland Strait. Honeydew Apiaries is only 2 minutes away.
An apiary is a bee yard, and this one has over 200 beehives. The owner, Daniel Ficza, began beekeeping as a hobby in his native Switzerland, and it was something he continued after he immigrated to Canada. He bounced around a few places, including Hants County in Nova Scotia before ending up on PEI. Here on the island Daniel and his family produce a wide variety of items, from the mead, church candles, candles, skin cream and lip balm and of course, jars of honey. Mead is, in fact, simply wine made from fermented honey. Honeydew sells their mead in regular wine bottles, which can also be bought at the Charlottetown Market and LLC locations.
We depart Honeydew Apiaries and your Winery Tour heads North towards Cavendish. Farms, fields, crops, and livestock can be seen the entire trip to Island Honey Wine. The Island Honey Wine Company opened on July 2017 and offers a variety of Mead made on site; Wildflower Honey, Lavender, Nectar Sweet, Apple Cider and Haskap. It is situated in the scenic rolling hills of Prince Edward Island between Charlottetown and Summerside in the quaint village of Wheatley River. This little piece of certified organic paradise tries to echo the harmony found in nature. A small herd of sheep mow the grasses and bring fertility to the living soils of the orchards. A free ranging flock of colourful ducks challenge the insects and pests that try to enjoy the fruits of farm labour. A friendly Great Pyrenees dog named Abby welcomes visitors as long as they have two legs, not four. She protects the livestock from coyotes and foxes. There are also several thousand honey bees that make this place their home and they are responsible for fruit pollination and honey production.
A 20-minute drive through the hills and dales of Central Queens County your PEI Private Winery Tour arrives at Riverdale Orchard. Anne and Alex Jamieson decided to turn a hobby into a business and make Cider. Cider is an alcoholic drink made from fermented apple juice, commonly known as Hard Apple Cider in Canada. After more than 3 years they had their first batch of artisan crafted cider, Summer 2018. While waiting for the apple trees to grow they used this time wisely and honed their craft from professionals. Attending Cornell University and achieving NACM certification (National Association on of Cider Makers) was the start of their artisan craft making adventure. By going back to the Three Counties, an area in England, UK, renowned for Cider Making, they worked with award winning artisan craft cider makers Anne & Alex enhanced their knowledge and skills further.
We depart Riverdale for our final destination on our tour itinerary to see the PEI Lavender Lady. Island Lavender Distillery offers quality all-natural lavender products that benefit the mind, body, and soul. Lavender essential oil is a known effective treatment for insomnia, depression, and anxiety. It’s time to take back control of your life and add a little relaxation, peace, and happiness.
